Packing for a whale shark tour is simple once you know a few key rules. Bring too much and you will juggle bags on a small boat; bring the wrong sunscreen and you may not be allowed in the water. Here is a practical checklist built from how the day actually runs off Cancun and Isla Mujeres.

The one rule everyone gets wrong: sunscreen

This is the most important item on the list, so we are starting with it. In this protected marine area, only biodegradable (reef-safe) sunscreen is allowed. Regular sunscreens contain chemicals that damage coral and can harm the animals, so standard bottles are not permitted for the swim.

Look for mineral formulas based on non-nano zinc oxide, and avoid oxybenzone and octinoxate. Apply it well before you get in, or better yet, cover up with a rash guard so you need less of it. If in doubt, ask us and we will point you to a compliant option.

Why biodegradable sunscreen actually matters

This is not red tape. The chemicals in conventional sunscreen, especially oxybenzone, are linked to coral bleaching and can stress the very reef and animals you came to see. In a protected area with a fragile ecosystem and a seasonal whale shark aggregation, keeping those chemicals out of the water is one of the simplest, highest-impact things a visitor can do. Switching bottles is a tiny effort that helps keep this experience possible for future seasons.

Wear or pack for the water

Sun and comfort

Sunglasses (a strap keeps them safe on the boat)

Motion-sickness medication if you are prone to it, taken before departure, since the open crossing can be bumpy
Reusable water bottle (water is included, but staying hydrated matters in the heat)

Camera and valuables

A waterproof camera or a phone in a floating waterproof case captures the encounter without risking your device. Skip loose jewellery and bring only the cash you need. Keep in mind that a marine park fee (around $15 USD) is paid on-site, so carry a little cash.

One honest tip: do not spend the whole swim behind a lens. These animals are enormous and unforgettable in person. Get your shot, then put the camera down and just watch.

Traveling with kids

If children who meet the age minimum are joining, pack a little extra: a well-fitting rash guard, their own reef-safe sunscreen, a light snack for after the swim and, if they are sensitive to motion, child-appropriate seasickness prevention (ask your pharmacist or doctor first). A familiar towel and dry clothes make the ride home comfortable. The crew is used to first-timers and keeps a close eye on young swimmers.

Before you leave the hotel

Eat a light breakfast, even though breakfast is often provided, so your stomach is settled for the crossing.
Take motion-sickness medication in advance if you need it; it works best before you feel unwell.
Apply reef-safe sunscreen early so it has time to set.
Confirm your pickup time and place the night before.

After the tour

Rinse your swimwear, hydrate, and give yourself an easy evening; a morning in the sun and open water is more tiring than it feels. If you bought photos or captured your own, this is the moment to relive the encounter. Renting or bringing your own gear

You do not need to buy or pack snorkel equipment. A mask, snorkel and fins, plus a life vest, are provided and sanitised on the tour, and the crew helps you find a mask that seals well, which matters far more than any gear you could bring from home. If you own a mask you love, especially a prescription one, bring it; otherwise travel light and use theirs, and give it a quick rinse afterwards to keep it kind to the next guest.

What is genuinely worth carrying from home is the small, easy-to-forget stuff: reef-safe sunscreen that meets the rules, a strap for your sunglasses, any medication you personally rely on, and a little cash for the park fee and tips. Those are the items a marina shop cannot always solve for you at six in the morning, and forgetting them is the only thing on this list likely to slow your day down. Everything bulky, from fins to flotation, is already waiting on the boat.
